In this blog post, we delve into the essential findings and trends highlighted in the report. We explore the sectors that will experience growth, the requisite skills and education, and the overall implications for job seekers and immigrants.
British Columbia‘s Labour Market Outlook report.
The Labour Market Outlook report offers a compelling 10-year glimpse into British Columbia’s employment landscape, outlining in-demand careers, skills training, education needs, and anticipated hiring sectors. Notably, 65% of the projected job openings aim to replace retiring workers, aligning with the expectation that up to nine million Canadians will retire by 2030.
Expanding the Workforce.
Beyond replacement roles, the report anticipates a 35% expansion of BC’s workforce, translating to 345,000 new jobs. With an annual average employment growth of 1.2%, the province is set to see a workforce of 3.1 million individuals by 2033.
Immigration’s Role in the Workforce.
A notable shift highlighted in the report is the substantial contribution of new immigrants to BC’s job market. The government predicts that, by 2033, 46% of new job seekers will be immigrants—marking a substantial increase from previous forecasts. The report projects the arrival of 470,000 new immigrant workers over the next decade, encompassing permanent and temporary residents.
The province highlights that the surge in immigration levels surpassing initial expectations and a rise in labour force participation among crucial age groups is anticipated to align the number of job seekers with the available job openings. According to the report, 75% of the projected job openings will necessitate some form of post-secondary education or training.
