Lena Metlege Diab Becomes Canada’s New Immigration Minister
Lena Metlege Diab has been appointed as Canada’s new Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship. The announcement was made on May 13, 2025, as part of a cabinet change by Prime Minister Mark Carney.
Diab takes over from Rachel Bendayan, who briefly held the role after Marc Miller. This new position puts Diab in charge of Canada’s immigration system during an important time of change.
Who is Lena Metlege Diab?
Lena Metlege Diab was born in Halifax, Nova Scotia, to Lebanese immigrant parents. She studied commerce and law and worked as a lawyer and businesswoman before entering politics.
She made history in Nova Scotia by becoming the first woman of Lebanese background elected to the provincial legislature, and the first woman to serve as both Attorney General and Minister of Justice in the province.
From 2013 to 2021, she was Nova Scotia’s Minister of Immigration. In that role, she helped bring more immigrants to the province, started programs for immigrant entrepreneurs, and helped launch new immigration streams to attract skilled workers.
What Will She Do as Immigration Minister?
As Canada’s new Immigration Minister, Diab will lead important work to manage the country’s immigration programs. Prime Minister Carney has said that he wants to adjust immigration levels to better match the country’s needs.
This includes:
- Balancing the number of new permanent residents
- Increasing French-speaking immigrants
- Reducing the number of temporary residents
Diab’s past experience and her personal connection to immigration will help her lead this work with care and understanding.
Why This Matters?
Diab’s appointment is important for both immigration policy and diversity in Canadian government. Her story as the daughter of immigrants and her years of experience show how newcomers contribute to Canada’s success.
As Immigration Minister, Diab will help shape how Canada welcomes people from around the world—and how they can build new lives here.
