Update to New Zealand Student Visa Work Rights
![]()
New Zealand is introducing changes that would greatly benefit overseas students as part of its ambitious revisions to student visa work entitlements. Announced on Monday, 14 July 2025, this strategic initiative is part of the government’s “International Education: Going for Growth Plan”, aimed at boosting the nation’s international education sector to NZD 7.2 billion by 2034
Rationale Behind the Reforms
The government’s decision comes amid global shifts: top study destinations like the US and Australia are tightening immigration rules. In this environment, New Zealand aims to position itself as a leading, welcoming educational hub. According to this plan, the number of international students enrolled will increase from 83,700 in 2024 to 105,000 in 2027 and 119,000 in 2034.
“It’s about supercharging growth in educational tourism while strengthening our economy,” says Education Minister Erica Stanford

- Postgraduate-level PhD and research-based Master’s students remain exempt from work caps—they can work full-time year-round, provided they continue studying full-time.
- Secondary school students (Years 12–13), aged 16+, are still bound by the 20-hour weekly cap and can work full-time during summer holidays with parental and school consent.
Final Takeaway: A Win-Win Reboot
This comprehensive reform is a strategic win for New Zealand’s international education. It provides students with enhanced work flexibility, smooth visa processing, and better financial support. It also positions New Zealand for growth in a competitive global education market, driving economic gains while appealing to students worldwide.
