Alberta Introduces New Expression of Interest (EOI) System for Immigration Program
04 October 2024
A new Expression of Interest (EOI) site has been introduced by the Alberta Advantage Immigration Program (AAIP) in an attempt to speed up the selection process for talented professionals wishing to relocate to Alberta. This significant step would streamline the application process for qualified candidates in an effort to strengthen Alberta’s economy by better aligning the province’s immigration strategy with labour market demands.
Candidates wishing to work in Alberta under the updated EOI system have to complete an online form available on the AAIP website. This form acts as a declaration of interest, letting the province know that the person wants to immigrate. Interestingly, there are no costs associated with submitting an EOI, which increases accessibility for possible newcomers.
Key Features of the New EOI System
Similar to the federal Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS), the new EOI procedure assigns scores to candidates based on a number of criteria, such as age, job experience, education, and language competency. The candidates who score higher will be given preference for provincial nominations, guaranteeing that the most qualified candidates are chosen to fulfil Alberta’s labor needs.
Using a points system, the EOI submissions will be evaluated, and those who pass will be added to a pool of candidates for Worker Stream consideration. Even though the EOI system is already operational, it won’t be until mid- to late-October 2024 for the first selection drawings. This will allow candidates to properly consider their proposals without feeling rushed by impending deadlines.
Addressing Labor Market Needs
After a period of exceptional demand, particularly for the Alberta Opportunity Stream, the AAIP opted to use this new way. From February to June 2024, the province froze applications for this stream in order to manage existing stocks and focus on priority industries. These industries—healthcare, technology, agriculture, tourism, and hospitality—are critical to Alberta’s economic growth.
With the use of the EOI system, immigration may be done with more focus, helping Alberta draw in highly qualified candidates who can successfully address labor shortages in these vital fields. In order to provide immigrants with a wide range of options, the program also offers many streams designed for both workers and entrepreneurs.
Streams Available Under AAIP
The AAIP Encompasses Several Application Streams:
For Workers:
- Tourism & Hospitality Stream: For those with employment opportunities in the tourism and hospitality industries.
- Alberta Opportunity Stream: Open to those who have received employment offers from Alberta firms.
- Alberta Express Entry Stream: For applicants in the federal Express Entry pool who fulfil certain requirements.
- Dedicated Health Care Pathway: Providing skilled healthcare professionals with work opportunities in Alberta.
- Rural Renewal Stream: Designed to attract newcomers to rural towns with labour shortages.
For Entrepreneurs:
- Rural Entrepreneur Stream: For people planning to start a business in rural Alberta.
- Graduate Entrepreneur Stream: For overseas graduates from Alberta’s postsecondary schools.
- Farm Stream: For experienced farmers looking to start or purchase a farm in Alberta.
- Foreign Graduate Entrepreneur Stream: For international graduates looking to start new enterprises in Alberta.
The implementation of the EOI system represents a significant shift in Alberta’s immigration strategy, giving preference to applicants who can meet the province’s economic requirements while also improving the AAIP’s overall effectiveness. In order to fully benefit from Alberta’s chances, prospective candidates are advised to familiarize themselves with the qualifying requirements and prepare their submissions.
